Title: How to Make Webcomics
Authors: Brad Guigar, Dave Kellet, Scott Kurtz and Kris Straub
Publisher: Image Comics, Inc.
I finished reading this book several weeks ago and I’ve been referring to it ever since. This is a great book for not only webcomics but for actually making comics in general. If you’re planning a printed book, such as myself, and not an online comic I highly recommend this. Just a few of the things they cover are character design, lettering and word balloons, art preparation and file formats, web hosting, business, advertising, printers, etc. The authors cover every aspect of what it takes to create a web presence and also make money from your art. It doesn’t go too in-depth into all these separate elements but there is still a generous amount of information packed in here. The authors are all successful web cartoonists and their individual comedic takes on different subjects makes for fast-paced “edu-tainment.” But while they make a living drawing cartoons they are serious businessmen and aren’t shy to lay out the importance of learning the art of business on top of your art. I took away a lot of great information for my forthcoming book. It now sits on my desk for regular referral alonside Scott McCloud’s Making Comics.
